Sanjay Singh Kushwaha, (37) is living with his wife and three children (2 sons and 1 daughter) -all are below 10 years of age in Shekhpura village of Khagaria district in Bihar. About 10 years back Sanjay Singh was affected by leprosy, starting with small insensitive patches over his back. He did not notice the patches for some time and days passed by. He was working as daily wage laborer around his village, which was also seasonal. His parents and other family members are also daily wage laborers and are living hand to mouth existence. Over the years his condition worsened and he developed clawing of fingers in both his hands and also developed ulcers over his feet.
During the field visit Damien Foundation community social workers noticed his condition and advised him to go for leprosy treatment at nearby Govt. primary health centre, were he was put on MDT treatment. Over the time his condition worsened and it became difficult for him to daily labor work. Meantime when Damien Foundation field worker visited Sanjay for follow up, he requested to provide some support were his livelihood was at stake. He requested to help to set up a small shop where he and his wife would sell cosmetic items.
DFIT offered him Rs.20,000/- ($286) to help set up a cosmetic shop to support the livelihood. Sanjay and his wife run the shop and earn around Rs.200-250 ($3 to $4) per day. Besides this support their living condition has not improved as their income is not enough to meet cater to other basic needs. He needs a roof over his head to protect his family from rain and winter and he also needs to support his children education.
Damien Foundation made an assessment of the situation and decided to support Sanjay’s family small cement sheet house. The family needs ₹ 1,75,000/- to build the house.
